Usually recommended every 6 months (but this varies from patient to patient), it is the way to spot any problems or issues early on so they can be addressed sooner rather than later. This can prevent the problem from manifesting which can lead to more substantial problems in the future. At Bar Hill Dental Clinic, we believe that prevention is better than cure and good prevention techniques such as good oral hygiene and diet advice is another key reason to see your dentist regularly.
There are many things that are examined when attending for a checkup such as:
Existing Complaints– listening and addressing any issues you are experiencing or concerns you may have.
Examination of Head & Neck– examining lymph nodes, muscles and your jaw listening for any noises, clicks and any pain from here.
Oral cancer screening- looking for suspicious lesions or patches inside and outside the mouth.
Assessing gums– looking for nice pink gums and assessing if any bleeding gums are present or signs of tartar build up and early gum disease.
Your teeth are checked– signs of decay, trauma or wear are checked.
Tooth charting and assessing quality of existing restorations– crown, bridges, dentures and existing fillings are all checked for wear and tear.
X-rays (if needed)– usually of any concerning areas, these are done regularly also to detect early tooth decay.
Your bite is checked.
Discussion of any dental issues you may have.
Discussing treatment options and explaining any treatment needed.
Discussing existing oral hygiene routines and social habits (e.g., smoking/ nail biting/ nighttime grinding etc.).
